Does anyone know of any catfish spots in the Wilmington area?

Dan Spears

According to the pair of outdoors experts that write for the StarNews, there are plenty of catfish options in Southeastern North Carolina.

Outdoors writer Mike Marsh says that from either its public fishing dock or from a boat, Sutton Lake is “full of flathead and channel catfish.” He also cites the fishing docks at the NC Wildlife Resource Commission’s Castle Hayne ramp and New Hanover County park if you don’t have a boat.

If you want out on the water, the Cape Fear River is the place to be.

“A great spot for catching blue catfish is in the Cape Fear and Northeast Cape Fear rivers in Wilmington’s downtown area,” Marsh writes. “Anglers can use boats to catch catfish in these water bodies.”

Capt. Marc Maus, who compiles the StarNews weekly fishing report (which is updated every Thursday afternoon at www.starnewsonline.com/outdoors) also says the Northeast Cape Fear River and Black River in Pender County “have lots of catfish and some big ones. Best baits are chicken livers, eels, shrimp, cut bait, minnows and night crawlers.”

If you want to go downriver, Marsh also said catfish are caught regularly at River Road Park, approximately two-thirds of a mile south of the Sanders Road-River Road intersection.
