Q. Whatever happened to the man who used to swim in the river on a regular basis?  The Star News ran articles about him several years ago.

A. You’re probably referring to Gregory Paul Manning, nicknamed the the “River Swimmer.”

According to a StarNews article published Sept. 23, 2006, he was shaken after he had to be rescued from the Cape Fear River when a current carried him south of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.

Manning, a homeless man who worked as a roofer, had been repeatedly rescued from the Cape Fear.

As to your question, MyReporter has been unable to find any subsequent reference to Manning. There were no stories in the StarNews about him after that one, he’s not listed in the Wilmington phone directory and a Google search turned up no clues.

He was arrested just a few weeks ago in Wilmington. There’s a mug shot in your own database.
