Is there really an abandoned barn the woods off Independence Boulevard near the Cameron Art Museum?

Jason Gonzales

There is a barn near the property owned by the Cameron Art Museum, according to Chris Fonvielle, a UNCW history professor.

He has mapped the earthworks in the area and noted that there is a barn that was adjacent to a home. The barn is not on museum land.

He did not have any further information about the barn.

According to Beverly Tetterton, with the New Hanover County Public Library, there used to be dairy farms dotted around the Cameron Art Museum property, but she had no information about a barn there.

If Chris Fonvielle says it is there, you can bet it is! There appeared to be an abandoned barn off the new road that runs into St.Andrews, coming from the new subdivision that looked old, and burned down less than a year ago. There was an old house that belonged to the Casteens, that was all shot up from the fighting that went on around that area in February of 1865. That house has now been remodeled and is in that new subdivision. The barn I’m speaking of was not far from that house. You have to remember that at one time, it was all wooded, and there were no roads, houses, or businesses. But that house was there in the woods, and the folks that lived in it, are buried in the Horne Cemetery on Antoinette Drive.
