That depends.

The Wilmington Police Department’s Traffic Unit rotates through different areas of the city, running radar and enforcing traffic laws on major thoroughfares as well as in neighborhoods, said Sgt. Mike Donelson, the unit’s supervisor.

Every week, the unit analyzes data to determine which areas have been experiencing a large number of crashes, Donelson said. The unit dispatches officers to those streets to crack down on traffic violations in the hopes that doing so will curb the crash rate.

The traffic unit also keeps a running list of complaints from citizens about perceived problem areas and tries to run enforcement in those locations to resolve whatever issues might exist. To make a complaint, call 910-343-3600.

In addition to the traffic unit, patrol officers are distributed around the city to not only respond to calls for service but also enforce traffic and other laws.
