For upper-level administrative positions like the provost job, the University of North Carolina Wilmington often considers candidates from both inside and outside of the school, said Dana Fischetti, spokeswoman for the university.
Administrative positions like the provost job are usually advertised nationally to pull together the most highly qualified candidates for the position.
“The candidate ultimately selected for the position is chosen based on the comparative strength of their qualifications,” Fischetti said. “In some cases, an internal candidate rises to the top as the strongest candidate and is selected for the promotion.”
