Q. What is the straw/grass seed mix used by road contractors when they finish a project? Where can it be obtained by the general public?
A. According the NC Department of Transportation Roadside Environmental Unit, the road contractors include what grass seed/straw mix in the individual contracts.
Chris Vause with the roadside environmental unit said the most common seed mixes consist of Bermuda, bahiagrass, centipede, and lespedeza grasses. The straw usually used is wheat straw hay.
Roadside contractors typically set out a temporary seed mix, and they use primarily Bermuda grass because of the sand in the area.
For yards, Vause recommends leaving out bahiagrass because it grows very quick and is difficult to mow. Seed mixes and hay can be found at any general farm supply store, and most seed mixes can be found at major home improvement chains like Lowes and Home Depot.
