Q. Who owns the lake property off Gordon Road that used to be owned by the university? Locals call it Emerald or Crystal Lake. What are the plans for this lake? I heard it was going to be a public park.
A. What locals call Emerald or Crystal Lake already is a public park, said Latashia Smith, administrative assistant for the New Hanover County Parks Division.
The lake is part of Smith Creek Park, on Harris Road.
“We allow people to use if for non-motorized boats, and you can fish from there. It’s catch and release,” Smith said.
The county did receive the lake from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Smith said. She said the lake used to be an underground spring where sand was taken from to build Interstate 40. After several years, it filled up.
The lake had been given to UNCW by the Department of Transportation, said Dana Fischetti, spokeswoman for the university. The school’s board of trustees transferred the property to New Hanover County in 2002.
