Q. Does anybody know the final name of the movie filmed out beyond Leland and at Carolina Beach a couple years ago, and if it will ever be shown? It was about a traveling medical team.
A. Area residents likely saw cast and crews from an untitled medical drama pilot that shot scenes in 2010 at such locations at Brunswick County’s Winnabow Airport and Carolina Beach.
The Warner Bros. pilot, later named “Gimmie Shelter,” has never aired, said Wilmington Regional Film Commission director Johnny Griffin.
The pilot, an ensemble drama from executive producer John Wells (“ER,” “Southland”), chronicled the travels of a mobile medical team designed to help in medical crises across the country. The show was written by Hannah Shakespeare (“Ghost Whisperer” and the 2007 “Bionic Woman” series) and was directed by Christopher Chulack (“Southland,” “ER” and “Third Watch”).
The production opened offices at EUE/Screen Gems studios in February 2010 and filmed from March 23 through April 1.
Griffin said he didn’t know whether the show had a chance of getting picked up by a network after two years.
“I don’t know what the second life for it could be,” he said. “It could depend on ownership rights and other factors.”
So far this year, no pilots have filmed in Wilmington or the surrounding area, Griffin said.
It’s a slow year for the region compared to that of 2011, which saw pilots such as, “Hart of Dixie” and “Revenge.”
Neither show tapped the Port City to film the series, however.
“Through the years, we’ve done a few, but it’s not a huge business for us,” Griffin said. “A lot of producers would rather shoot in L.A., I think, because of convenience.”
