From Malissa Talbert, city spokeswoman:
“Blue street name signs are being installed in the downtown/historic districts only as part of implementing the city’s signage plan adopted by City Council in 2009.
“There are several reasons for the changes in the downtown area – primarily to make it more easy to identify where the downtown and historic areas are, and to highlight the locally designated historic district boundaries and the Cape Fear Historic Byway.
“Also, the blue downtown street name signs are consistent with the existing blue-colored wayfinding and Riverwalk signage downtown.
“The new signs comply with new federal and state sign regulations and signs are being replaced with existing maintenance funds. This is made possible through savings achieved by bulk purchase of required sign hardware, recycling of old sign hardware, and funds collected from fines.”
