Not much has changed since the StarNews’ last update about the proposed Brunswick Forest movie theater nearly three years ago. That’s when Florida-based Frank Family Entertainment group put the brakes on plans for a 14-screen complex that was originally scheduled to open in 2009.
“There’s still nothing happening,” said Brunswick Forest spokesman Tobin Spirer. “It’s very difficult to attract a theater.”
While he’s not completely ruling out the possibility of Frank eventually resuming its original plans, Spirer said the company has taken down its sign at Brunswick Forest.
“They certainly have not stepped forward the way we had originally anticipated,” he said. “We’re still hopeful it may occur, but there’s been no substantive activity with Frank in the past two years.”
During that time, Brunswick Forest has “worked diligently to find another theater complex with other entertainment” by “actively negotiating” with various major movie chains but has not found “anyone willing to commit,” Spirer added. “It really is a question of population density,” he said. “We just need to get to that magic number that will attract a theater. While Brunswick Forest is doing very well, the county is still relatively sparsely populated and many large players look at numbers.”
By his own estimation, Spirer expects a theater will happen within the next two or three years. “We hope it will be sooner rather than later,” he said. “I think it’s inevitable, but when is a matter of conjecture. I can’t imagine any other venue in Leland other than Brunswick Forest for a multiplex cinema.”
