This question from reader Stephen Worrell has us stumped.
He wonders if anybody has a copy of the old TV commercial for Carolina Furniture Budget Store. Here’s how he remembers the commercial:
“It was done in a studio. It was two young African-American girls, ages 10-12.
“They walked up to each other and started talking furniture.
“Girl 1: ‘And you know what?’
“Girl 2: ‘What?’
“Girl 1: ‘You just can’t beat ’em.’
“Both (looking into the camera): ‘WELL, I guess you better stop tryin’ to beat those prices, ’cause they’re the BEST IN TOWN.’ (The word ‘BEST’ is emphasized by the dramatic hand gesture of bringing one hand up, making a fist, and bringing the fist down in a 90-degree motion across the waist.)”
If you can help Stephen find a copy of that TV commercial, leave a comment below by clicking on the link.
Also, reader Jacki London would like to know what happened to the two girls in the commercial.
Thanks.

Not sure but I think this is the same store that used to feature Fred Retchin in ads back in the 70’s or 80’s saying, “We don’t care about making money – we just love to sell furniture.” What a hoot! I vaguely remember the ads mentioned above and think they ran on WECT-TV. You might check their archives.
I remember it. Used to run on WWAY TV also. I think that is where it was produced. I worked there in the 70’s. They might have a copy of it. But I believe it was done on 2 inch video tape (used a lot at the time) Unless there was a copy made in a an archive, I doubt it was saved.
I’m also looking for the same Carolina Furniture Budget Store commercial made in the 70’s I think on 315 red cross street…

I miss those girls! I’d LOVE to see that old commercial again someday – a great memory from my Wilmington childhood.
The store has its current commercial posted on this website: http://www.carolinafurniturewilmington.com
The website also gives this email address as a contact:
carfurn@eastnc.twcbc.com
I would try emailing/calling the current owners to ask if they still have a copy of the old ad on file or if they know who does.
Good luck! Maybe if they realize how much interest there is in seeing it again, they’ll put the old commercial on the website too!
I appeared in a commercial in the late seventies or eighties for this store and am trying to find it too.
