According to licensing clerk Cristy Giddens in the Wilmington office of the N.C. Marine Fisheries Division, anyone can harvest up to 1 bushel of oysters or 100 clams for their own personal use without a license. Two or more people shellfishing on a boat can collect up to 2 bushels of oysters and 200 clams.
Crabbing requires a recreational commercial license unless the person is using his or her own dock.
Commercial shellfishing licenses for larger amounts are sold to owners of fish markets.
