Clifton “Pop” Herring was Michael Jordan’s basketball coach at Laney High School in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Herring was relieved of his duties as coach as a result of an illness shortly after Jordan left Laney to play basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Herring was a basketball standout at New Hanover High School and served as a Wildcats’ coach before taking over at Laney.
A well-liked man who was recognized as a wonderful coach, Herring can sometimes be seen walking the streets of Wilmington.
