“The North Carolina National Guard continues to use the armory at 2221 Carolina Beach Road, Wilmington [Map this], and has no plans to close it or curtail operations there. There is a medical platoon located there as well as full-time staff,” said National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Robert F. Carver.
The armory is assigned to the 120th Combined Arms Battalion, which is part of the 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team, the state’s largest unit.
Plans to convert the nearby reserve center on Lake Shore Drive are still in the discussion stage.
“Part of the reserve center is scheduled to be transitional housing or something like that,” city of Wilmington spokeswoman Malissa Talbert said.
The timetable for such a switch is unclear.
“Nonetheless, there was never any talk of vacating the armory as far as I know,” Talbert said.
