Why doesn’t Wrightsville Beach keep public beach accesses in a passable condition?

Jim Ware

Here’s the answer from Bob Simpson, Wrightsville Beach town manager:

“Our Parks Department has the responsibility for maintaining beach access locations and we will take a look at access No. 37. Wrightsville Beach has one of the highest number of public access sites in North Carolina and we try to adequately maintain them; however, with only a very small parks maintenance function this often becomes a challenge. Some of the less heavily used access points on the South end (includes No. 37) are extremely narrow and are close to private residences. I suspect that in this particular case it is a matter of vegetation growing into the already narrow access path. Tony Wilson, our Planning and Parks Director will look at the situation and we’ll direct the necessary assets to correct the situation. We thank you for bringing this to our attention.”

Tony Wilson said during the week of Nov. 7, 2011, that the vegetation along beach access 37 had been trimmed. One of the reasons for the vegetation is to create a buffer between the public access and adjoining private property, Wilson said.
