Why did New Hanover County buy iPads for employees and how many were bought?

New Hanover County purchased iPads to increase efficiency, an official said.

“The county continues to look at ways to reduce costs and to become more efficient in its day-to-day operations. In order to achieve efficiencies the county invests in tools that will help achieve those goals,” said Andre R. Mallette, New Hanover County assistant county manager.

The purchase of iPads is a case in point, he said.

“From an efficiency standpoint, because of its mobility, the iPad allows its users ready access to their calendars and email accounts as well as notes during meetings away from the office. Commissioner meeting agendas are prepared every two weeks and multiple copies are run and distributed. Each of these agenda packets can include as many as 60 to 70 pages. The iPads are being used to access that information which reduces significantly the use of paper supplies as well as copy supplies such as ink and toner.

“This will result in significant savings over time,” Mallette said.

The county has limited its purchase of iPads to department heads and county commissioners. The county has purchased an iPad for only one commissioner,” Mallette said.

Three commissioners use their personal iPads and one commissioner has not opted for an iPad, he added.

The cost for each iPad is $629.99. There is also a monthly charge of $30 for 3G connectivity, Mallette said.

At a time when New Hanover county teachers have to spend their own money to buy pencils, folders, and even paper…. it’s a discrace to see the county admin staff wasting much needed education tax dollars.

Here’s a thought… sell all of the ipads, fire the county admin staff since they add no value whatsoever – then divide the savings among the teachers to supplement their pathetic salaries or maybe give them a bonus for the first time in 5 years…
