The monument with the semicircular wall is dedicated to World War II Medal of Honor recipients. They are New Hanover High School graduates William Halyburton Jr. and Charles P. Murray Jr.

The bronze monument was dedicated by the New Hanover County Board of Education on Oct. 12, 1999, and erected in 2003 by New Hanover classes of 1938 and 1943 for the two.

New Hanover is believed to be the lone school in the United States with more than one medal of honor winner.

The New Hanover PTA and Army JROTC are devising a plan for maintenance and upkeep.

The monument closer to Brogden Hall was erected in honor of World War I deceased veterans from New Hanover County. The deceased are listed on the front with a Latin phrase on the back. It is a magnificent tribute to those who lost their lives.
