What do the Wilmington Hammerheads do in the off-season?

Some Hammerheads stay in town during the offseason, but most go elsewhere.

When the Hammerheads’ season ends each year the players go their separate ways, many with dreams still alive for professional soccer careers.

Wilmington coach David Irving said some return to their hometowns, while others might go back to school or move on to other clubs still engaged in their seasons.

“Our contracts are pretty much five months of the year,” Irving said. “So the other seven months, they have to do something. I wish we could keep more players around during the off-season.

“If they lived in Wilmington, it would make life a lot easier.”

For example, Luke Mulholland was a late-season addition for the Minnesota Stars of the North American Soccer League. And he helped the team win the league championship. Mullholland is now reportedly training with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer.

Midfielder Paul Nicholson remained in the Port City and recently completed his first season as an assistant soccer coach for the Cape Fear Academy boys soccer program.

For many, an off-season job is a necessity.

“Every year, the situation is different,” Irving said, noting a number of other players are still in town, including Tom Parratt, Kyle Polak and University of North Carolina Wilmington products Chris Murray and Brock Duckworth.
