There are no paid firefighters in the Southport Fire Department, Fire Chief Greg Cumbee said.
The Southport Fire Department is a city department but consists of 32 volunteers.
“We are a department of the city but we are all volunteers,” Cumbee said. “It’s a lot of dedicated men and women.”
The average length of service in the fire department is 17 years and the average age of a firefighter is about 40 years old, Cumbee said.
The fire department is supported by the city and a fire fee fund, he said.
