Pedestrian improvements for the Park Avenue and Independence Boulevard intersection have been funded and the design is complete. But it’s unclear when construction will begin. The project is being reviewed by the N.C. Department of Transportation, Superintendent for Recreation and Downtown Services Amy Beatty said. The improvements are funded through a federal grant that requires several layers of review, she added. As soon as it gets authorization from DOT, the project will be bid for construction. Improvements will also include 655 feet of multi-use path along Independence Boulevard from Hawthorne Drive to Empie Park.

This is one of several intersection improvements along the Cross-City Trail that are funded and in the design phase. The others include Shipyard Boulevard and Independence Boulevard, Eastwood Road and Rogersville Road and Eastwood Road and Military Cutoff Road. All of these intersections will receive a signal design upgrade, painted crosswalks and pushbutton-activated signal heads.
