While there are some kinds of heirloom tomatoes available at stores around town, including Tidal Creek Co-op, 5329 Oleander Drive, Wilmington [Map this], and Carolina Farmin’, 1201 Market St., Wilmington [Map this], consumers might find it difficult to get the German Johnson variety.
Locally, any remaining tomato crops have been wiped out by rain, including the deluge brought upon the area by Hurricane Irene in August 2011.
“I just picked my last tomatoes which were sad-looking,” said Stefan Hartmann, owner of Black River Organic Farm, a Riverfront Farmers Market vendor based in Ivanhoe. “Sometimes around here you can get a fall crop of tomatoes, but unfortunately any tropical rainstorm will wipe them out.”
One possibility: An Eagle Island Produce buyer was at a market in Columbia, S.C., on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, and might be bringing back some German Johnson tomatoes. Give the store, at 2500 U.S. 421 North, Wilmington [Map this], a call at (910) 762-1193 to find out.
