Where are those large ships going when they head upriver from Wilmington?

The vessels headed through downtown Wilmington are not Port of Wilmington customers, said Shannon Moody, spokeswoman for the N.C. State Ports Authority.

“Our vessels turn in the turning basin prior to downtown and head back out to open ocean. The tanker vessels through downtown Wilmington are most likely headed to the Chemserve terminal upriver,” Moody said.

Chemserve Terminal Inc. is a petroleum and chemicals products terminal in Wilmington.

“It is very impressive to see these large vessels navigate upriver,” Moody said.
