The city of Wilmington’s traffic engineering division usually places no-littering signs across the city at the request of law enforcement officers who suspect a problem of illegal dumping, said city traffic engineer Don Bennett.
The signs typically are placed in more remote areas, he said. Officials want to ward off against posting too many signs because they can become eyesores, Bennett added.
“I think it’s generally known that littering is illegal,” he said.
Outside of city limits, the N.C. Department of Transportation generally has the ability to put up signs, though traffic engineers with the department also are cautious about how many signs are erected because of the possibility of driver distraction, a spokesman said.

Go to Wal-Mart and drop the $3.99 for a sign for God’s sake.
