While gators are less common in the actual lake, they’re frequent patrons of the dark water canals around it, said Janice Mercer of Lake Waccamaw State Park. The Columbus County park and lake are near the Green Swamp, prime turf for the reptiles.
White Lake, a smaller body of water in Bladen County, hasn’t had any gator sightings in a long time, mostly because it’s a hotbed for recreation, town officials and a state park ranger said.
“There’s a possibility there could be some that are there,” said Ranger Lane Garner of the neighboring Singletary Lake State Park. The state also manages White Lake. “I wouldn’t believe that gators would be around there because there’s so much activity.”
