Interstate 74 sign.

Since the I-73/I-74 corridor is designated as a “high priority corridor,” the U.S. Congress authorized the route names, N.C. Department of Transportation spokeswoman Tammy Stewart said.

The designation as a high-priority corridor allows highway planners “to bypass normal route naming procedures,” Stewart said.
