Radio talk show host Marty Shirah resigned from Cumulus Broadcasting to work in generator sales, said Shirah and Brian Sims, program director for WAAV-AM radio.

“The drive – gasoline and all that stuff – put me out of business, basically,” said Shirah, who lives in Sunset Beach. “It was just getting way too hard.”

He is selling standby home generators, a business he says will be more lucrative.

Shirah has been in radio since 1984 or 1985, working at stations in Florence, S.C.; Amarillo, Texas; and Branson, Mo.

In Wilmington, he worked at WLTT, “the Big Talker,” before joining Cumulus Broadcasting.

He took over as host of the 5:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. morning show when longtime WAAV talk-show host Donn Ansell retired in 2006.

He moved to an afternoon slot in in May 2010 when Curtis Wright joined WAAV, hosting a show from 6 to 10 a.m.

Shirah then took over the 5 to 7 p.m. slot held by Harvard Jennings, who retired voluntarily.

Shirah’s afternoon slot now will be manned by Tyler Cralle, who was producer of Wright’s morning show “On the Beat.” Cralle’s show will focus on local political events, “while also engaging callers in high-energy discussions on state and national issues,” according to a press release from the station.

Shirah said he had no issue with his colleagues at WAAV.

“The people I worked with were awesome,” he said. “That’s what I miss.”

Shirah plans to continue performing in his annual Christmas show, “A Night With Santa,” in December at the Scottish Rite Temple. The show benefits the Rite Care Centers of North Carolina.

He also makes appearances as Santa Claus during the holidays.
