What can you tell me about the history of Freeman Park?

Freeman Park, the mile-long stretch of undeveloped land at the north end of Carolina Beach, largely stood as wide open space until 2004, Police Chief William Younginer said.

That’s when the town of Carolina Beach entered into an agreement with New Hanover County to take over responsibility for it.

A committee was formed to come up with rules to govern it, instituting fees to drive four-wheel-drive vehicles on the beach and requiring permits.

It continues to meet regularly to review, revise and create new policies.

Today, the park is popular with campers and fishermen. It’s also one of the few beaches to allow alcohol or dogs.

The beach itself is owned by the state, as all beaches are. The land behind it is privately owned by a number of families, including the Freemans.

Was Freeman Park/Beach every the designated beach for African Americans. I recently moved to Brunswick County and the locals tell me that was the beach for African Americans to include Sea Breeze. Where can I find the history of this beach.
