Here’s the full question as it was submitted:
“Why do they not route traffic one way into Wilmington (downtown) on Princess Place Drive starting at Market Street and Princess Place Drive (at McDonald’s) and then use Market Street one way out of town up to Market Street and Princess Place Drive (at McDonald’s)? This would surely relieve a lot of accidents on Market Street where it is so narrow. There are plenty of crossover streets to accommodate access to the south side of Market Street.”
And the answer:
Princess Place Drive was not built to withstand the volume or weight of traffic that Market Street handles, said Allen Pope, N.C. Department of Transportation Division 3 engineer.
“Also, the land use is much more residential,” Pope said.
Princess Place Drive will be transferred to the city once paving of the road is complete, he said.
