Why does N.C. DOT waste time edging grass medians on the MLK Parkway?

Patrick Gannon

Actually, if you’re referring to weed-whacking, that’s likely being done by city of Wilmington crews through an agreement with the N.C. Department of Transportation, DOT officials said.

“That level of service is being provided by the city of Wilmington,” said Allen Pope, N.C. DOT division engineer.

The city wanted vegetation to look better along the Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, so the N.C. DOT pays the city what it would have spent to do the work, said Jerry Taylor, New Hanover County maintenance engineer with the N.C. DOT.

But Taylor said some people don’t think that keeping the grass medians looking sharp is a waste of time and money. For everyone who thinks that, there’s another person who is happy the work is being done, he said.

“It’s a very tough balancing act at times,” Taylor said.
