Progress Energy’s Sutton power plant in Wilmington could technically be converted to burn garbage, but it would take a lot of resources, said company spokesman Scott Sutton.
“With enough money and time, sure, but you have to weigh the cost of doing that,” he said. “Right now you could not do it.”
At one point, Progress Energy tried co-firing wood waste and coal, he said. But Sutton added: “As the plant is built now, no it could not take garbage.”
The Sutton plant is set to shut down and the company has announced plans to build a new, gas-fired combined-cycle unit scheduled to begin operation in 2014.
