Why is New Hanover County fire hiring a person to check fire hydrants?

Kevin Maurer

Conducting semi-annual maintenance of fire hydrants throughout the New Hanover County Fire District directly relates to the credit given toward your homeowners insurance, said Deputy Fire Chief Matt Davis

“We accomplish this using temporary part-time employees using a pickup truck,” Davis said in an e-mail to the StarNews. “This job announcement is to fill a vacancy not a new position. We have been doing this for a number of years and the program has been very successful.”
