The stacks that dominate the U.S. 421 skyline are about the same size as proposed stacks for the Titan cement plant. The two smokestacks at the Sutton Plant are about 550 feet tall, according to Progress Energy. Debbie Elliott, a spokeswoman for Carolinas Cement Co. and Titan America, said the one stack on the proposed cement plant would reach 540 feet.
In April 2008, Titan America and its local subsidiary, Carolinas Cement Co., announced plans to construct a cement plant in Castle Hayne. The company has said the project, proposed for the former Ideal Cement site on the banks of the Northeast Cape Fear River, would bring high-paying jobs and a sustainable tax base to the county. But critics are worried the plant would damage the environment, including hundreds of wetlands adjacent to the plant site that would be mined, and that mercury and other emissions could become a public health hazard.
