Matt Davis, New Hanover County’s fire marshal, said firefighters are allowed to take trucks to the grocery store once a day and use them on other official errands, like trips to the hardware store for parts and tools.
“They are not allowed to use it for personal errands,” Davis said.
Firefighters work in teams, and Davis said they try to keep these teams together in case there is a call. Using the trucks for official business makes it easier for the firefighters to respond if there is a call and they are away from the station.
Plus, if the firefighters used their cars to run errands, the county would have to pay mileage.
