Why do so many N.C. license plates in Wilmington start with the letters SVD?

Alex Pompliano

The reason so many North Carolina license plates begin with the letters SVD in Wilmington is due to the distribution process of license plates.

When the latest batch of license plates came out from the warehouse, they were all put on the same truck and delivered to the two license plate agencies in Wilmington. These plates were a part of the SVD series, or license plates that begin with the letters SVD.

The first three letters of North Carolina license plates have no actual meaning. They are determined by sequential order.
