It is the responsibility of the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office to patrol the area of the roundabout on Middle Sound Loop Road since it is outside the city limits of Wilmington. “We are going to have one of our SAFE deputies patrol this area,” said Cpl. Jerry Brewer, sheriff’s office public information officer.

Before roundabout completion the DOT should have mailed out driving instruction to all MSL and Ogden Elementary School families. I guess the DOT overestimated common sense among the drivers in this area. Here is the basics of navigating a roundabout.

    1. When approaching roundabout you YIELD to vehicles already in roundabout. (If that’s not self explanatory, it means do not go if a vehicle is coming)

    2. Once clear, enter roundabout. Vehicles traveling in the roundabout have the right of way. (So, do not stop in the roundabout unless another motorist doesn’t know rule #1)

    3. Exit roundabout. (Be sure to take a moment and reflect on what you just accomplished)
