Former Brunswick County sheriff Ronald Hewett does not receive a public pension, likely because of his convictions on state and federal charges.
Brunswick County employees participate in the state’s local government retirement system plan, which pays out a certain percentage of the employee’s salary after five years of service.
Hewett would normally be eligible for benefits. He served as sheriff from 1995 until his resignation in 2008.
But he served about a year in prison after pleading guilty to a felony charge of obstruction of justice and state charges of embezzlement.
The N.C. Office of the State Treasurer confirmed that Hewett is not drawing a pension.
According to a rule adopted in 2007, public employees can be prohibited from drawing a pension if convicted of state or federal charges involving public corruption, according to the benefits handbook.

It seems like every other day or two I would see Ron`s picture in the paper, I made a joke to an officer at the sheriff`s department that every police car in Brunswick county must have a life sized cardboard picture of Ron in the trunk because he couldn`t possibly be everywhere at the same time. Truth is he was, he was a no nonsense, johnny on the spot, take care of business type of guy. And I for one miss him as our sheriff
Please tell me what Sheriff Hewitt is doing now. Thanks. Candy
