Jon Rosborough, director of Wilmington International Airport, does not have specific dates for when Gordon Road was separated by the airport.
“It is my understanding that this did occur just before we entered World War II when the Army Air Guard expanded the airport for military purposes. There were several roads that were disrupted as a result of this expansion by the government, to include Gordon Road,” Rosborough said.
This area where the airport is now located was farmland and owned by the Feemstra and Blake families, he said.
Chris O’Keefe, New Hanover County planning director, said he doesn’t have anything in his files relative to the Gordon Road connection.
O’Keefe said the road likely was split prior to the creation of the county zoning ordinance in 1969.
