What do the Wilmington City Council members do for a living?

Shelby Sebens

Mayor Bill Saffo is the owner/broker-in-charge of Hanover Realty Inc. in Wilmington, which recently merged with Sea Coast Realty.

Mayor Pro Temp Earl Sheridan is a professor of public and international affairs at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Councilman Kevin O’Grady is a “post-career” lawyer. This once was referred to as “retired”, but the level of activity of modern “retirees” demands new terminology, he said. In addition to his city duties, he is active as a board member of Historic Wilmington Foundation, Wilmington Downtown Inc., Associates for a Regional Concert Hall (ARCH), and past-president of Residents of Old Wilmington. He is also the local coordinator of the AARP Tax-Aide program serving hundreds of area taxpayers from the New Hanover County Main Library from Feb. 1 until April 15.

Councilwoman Laura Padgett recently retired from and closed her private investment advising practice. She was a stock broker, financial and investment adviser, affiliated most recently with ING. She has also been with MetLife and worked a number of years in advertising sales management for both the New York Times and Knight Ridder newspapers. She worked in financial services for 22 years.

Councilman Charlie Rivenbark works for Maus Warwick Matthews & Co. and represents buyers and sellers in real estate transactions when there is a sale or lease involved. He has been doing this for most of his adult life other than when he was in the restaurant business during the ’90s, he said.

Councilwoman Margaret Haynes is a retired federal employee, having served as a district representative for the Sixth-District Congressman from Virginia.

Councilman Neil Anderson is self-employed with Rising Tide Sales Inc. He is a territory manager for three furniture manufacturers and importers.
