According to Amy Beatty, interim recreation superintendent, concerts are still held at the Legion Sports Complex on Carolina Beach Road. They are usually small affairs, however, and she said the city tries to steer organizers to use the smaller practice field instead of the main field. It costs less and the rules concerning what can and cannot be done there are more flexible.
Beatty said maintaining the turf on the main field, which is where New Hanover High School plays its varsity soccer and football games, costs a lot to maintain so rules had to be laid down to protect it.
All this could be changing, though. Beatty said a feasibility study is underway to determine if it’s a good idea to install synthetic turf grass on the stadium field.
“This would open up the possibility of having different activities on the field,” she said, “and essentially give us just about give us unlimited use on that stadium field.”
After that, the city would begin marketing the field for more concerts and other events.
