How often do both bridges connecting Wilmington and Leland shut down at the same time?

Ken Little

The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and Isabel Holmes Bridge are closed when a commercial vessel navigates through on the river, N.C. Department of Transportation spokeswoman Tammy Stewart said.

“Usually, if one bridge opens, the other will open when the vessel reaches it. It is very rare that both bridges open at the same time,” Stewart said.

N.C. DOT does not close the bridges due to weather conditions.

“During weather events, the N.C. State Highway Patrol closes the highway, during hurricanes for instance,” Stewart said.
