The palm tree was planted some time between 1990 and 1995, estimates owner Charles Carver, operator of the Ibiza Nightclub.
The tree is planted on the side of the building at 118 Market St., Wilmington [Map this].
“I bought the property in 2001 and it was there. I didn’t actually plant that,” Carver said.
The tree is now about 30 feet tall.
“It’s a really fast-growing variety,” Carver said.

The palm tree is a Washingtonia robusta. It is seen very frequently in Southern California. They are not as cold hardy as many of the other palms here, but it seems to do well despite many of the green fronds dying in the winter. I think this tree would do even better if someone applied some “palm special” fertilizer during the summer growing season.
