The City of Wilmington recreation department sponsored Dog Jog each fall. The event typically included a dog walk and a human 5K run and costume contests.
The last year the city held the event was 2008, although the Pooch Plunge portion of the festivities is still being held each fall at the Legion Stadium Pool.
“It was actually part of budget cuts in 2009 that was the reason we didn’t do it for 2009,” said Tammy Skinner, a recreation program specialist for the City of Wilmington.
“We’re able actually to raise just as much money doing the Pooch Plunge as we were doing the entire Dog Jog event; which there were a lot staffing costs and that type of thing associated with Dog Jog.”
Any chance of bringing back Dog Jog?
“I guess it’s always a possibility,” Skinner said. “There has not been any talk recently, but it’s always a possibility down the line.”
Particular area rescue groups benefited from the event and this year the funds raised from the Pooch Plunge went to the Wilmington Dog Park Committee.
“We kind of take a look at the program each to see how we’re going to handle the funds,” Skinner said.
