The speed limit then drops back down to 55 mph over the causeway. U.S. 17 headed north from the Waterford area is 45 mph through the superstreet and then raises to 55 mph prior to merging with U.S. 74/76, Higgins said.
Given the short distance between the merge with U.S. 74/76 and the N.C. 133 overpass, there is no speed limit sign posted.
“Technically, that short distance is 60 mph, but N.C. DOT didn’t post it so that people merging from U.S. 17 wouldn’t try to speed up quickly just to have to slow back down,” Higgins said.
“There is also a congestion issue in the merge area and N.C. DOT didn’t want motorists jockeying for lane changes. That is why there is a solid white lane line between the two through lanes along U.S. 74/76. The solid line is so that motorists have to remain in their lane,” he added.
