How is it possible that Hampstead proclaims itself to be the ‘Seafood Capital of the Carolinas’?

The answer sits in the heart of Hampstead.

Within the confines of an unassuming building off U.S. 17 is one of the largest distributors of fresh and frozen seafood in the Southeast.

For decades, two local seafood businesses – J.H. Lea & Sons on U.S. 17 and Atlantic Seafood Co. on N.C. 210 – delivered their saltwater goods to restaurants and grocers all over this region. In 2008, Atlantic Seafood Co. bought J.H. Lea & Sons, which had been in business since 1918, ultimately expanding its clientele.

Restaurants and markets from Maryland to Florida and west to Tennessee count on Atlantic Seafood Co. for tasty ocean cuisine including clams and crabs, king mackerel and mahi-mahi. The company’s delivery drivers make stops in many cities in North Carolina as well as South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia.
