Can I play on school playgrounds on the weekends?

Jason Gonzales

The answer depends on the school.

New Hanover County Schools

In New Hanover County, children can play on playgrounds in the county with parent/guardian supervision and at their own risk. However, this is subject to the discretion of the school, because some schools may lock their playgrounds on the weekend, Julia LaBombard, administrative secretary of operations for New Hanover County Schools said. Brunswick County Schools

In Brunswick County, residents will have to contact their local school to get approval from the principal. Generally, a request for use is granted for a school-sanctioned event or community-use agreement, said Stephen Miley, executive director of Brunswick County Schools said. Many school yards in Brunswick County are secured and law enforcement will likely question anyone on school property — especially after hours, he said. To find a school in your area, click here.

Pender County Schools

Pender County’s policies for playground use differ from school to school, said Joyce Keith, director of community services. Contact the school principal or the school’s facilities and grounds office for more information. To find a school in your area, click here.
