Why does the city continue to pick up my garbage on Mondays, even when it falls on a holiday?

The city of Wilmington strives to be as consistent as possible on trash pickup days to minimize confusion for customers, according to the city’s public information officer Malissa Talbert. Pickup days change only twice a year – Thanksgiving and Christmas. If the city changed pickup days on a regular basis, it would not only increase confusion, but would also increase the city’s costs, she added.

The city does not pay solid waste employees more for working on a holiday because they are on a four-day, 10-hour work week, which means the city will pay them for their day off the week of the holiday. This means they will still get a holiday, but it will sometimes be a different day than other city workers.
