Who made the decision to paint Cape Fear Memorial Bridge green with gray trim? Can that be changed and the bridge painted colors that are more reflective of Wilmington?

The paint colors — two shades of green — were selected by a committee formed within the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and N.C. Department of Transportation staff, said N.C. DOT Division Engineer Allen Pope.

The committee was formed at the WMPO’s December 2009 Transportation Advisory Committee meeting and color selection was formalized at the January 2010 TAC meeting, Pope said.

The minutes and resolution can be found on the WMPO website.

“The colors will be two different shades of green. The lighter green color will match the color already in place on the support structure, with darker green accent color bands around to the top of the towers and along the top and bottom rail of the lift span,” Pope said.

Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said last year that his preference for the bridge paint color would be teal “in respect to UNCW’s colors.”

“I definitely don’t think it should be battleship gray,” Saffo said.

Work on the bridge project is nearing completion.

“As to changing the color, we are well beyond that decision. This contract is well under way, with the contractor painting the towers now,” Pope said.

Those colors are horrible!!! The people who made the decision should have their houses painted those colors! Even Battleship Grey would have been much better!

The colors are really, really bad. BLEH! I was hoping they would do a bright red–like in San Francisco. (Golden Gate Bridge)
