As a native Wilmingtonian, I can say from experience – as far away as possible. Wear good walking shoes. Fourth Street is probably your best bet.
But the city does try to make it easier on us.
On-street parking will be free starting at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, and all day Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, for Riverfest activities. Parking enforcement for metered and time-limited spaces will be suspended in the Central Business District, which extends from Ann to Red Cross streets and from Water to Fourth streets. On-street parking is always free on Sundays. Signs will be posted to alert visitors about the free parking.
Parking in the Second Street Parking Deck, the Market Street Parking Deck and the county parking deck located beside the New Hanover County Public Library will charge a $5 entry fee on Saturday and Sunday.
The city’s surface parking lots located at Second and Market streets and Second and Orange streets will operate as normal and visitors will be required to pay at the pay station on the lot.
Many private parking lots and decks will not be free to the general public. Be sure to read the signs at the deck and lot entrances carefully.

If parking on the east side of Third Street and south of Market Street, it may be helpful to use the flashing crosswalk at the corner of Ann and Third Streets.
