Why doesn’t the Wilmington City Amateur golf tournament require players to be Wilmington residents?

Brian Mull

The Wilmington City Amateur has always been open to all amateur golfers in part because the Wilmington Municipal Golf Course is public, according to Muni pro David Donovan IV. Also, many regular golfers at the course live outside the city limits and many people who formerly lived in Wilmington return each September to compete in the City Amateur.

Excluding those players would critically reduce the field.

Donovan IV said the tournament is a competition to determine the best area amateur golfer who chooses to participate.
