North Carolina prisoners have no access to the Internet and they have only some access to television, said N.C. Department of Correction spokesman Keith Acree.
Prisoners can only watch TV in a common area, and even then, prisoners pay for the TV programming — whether it’s basic cable or from satellite — from telephone and canteen profits. Acree said that means tax dollars aren’t being used to pay for TV programs for prisoners.
He added that in some states, prisoners do have TVs in their individual cells, but not in North Carolina.
And in state prisons here, watching TV isn’t a guaranteed right.
“We view TV as a management tool,” Acree said. “It’s a privilege given for good behavior, and it can be taken away for bad behavior.”

Why not talk to some of the prisoners who have been released from NCDOC. They can give you information on what they do and don’t have at each prison.
They DO NOT have it like u think!Like the article said it’s paid for by the MONEY THEY spend on canteen and the very exspensive phone calls!Like the other person wrote why don’t u talk to some who have been released or do some research. It’s for ppl w/good behavior and is a privilege. If u do have BAD behavior u are not allowed to watch T.V!It can at anytime be taken away like the article said also.Prison is not like what u hear. That they are living it up on taxpayers money or they live better than ppl on the outside. No they suffer in lots of ways. It’s not what u think it maybe cause of what others say. It’s HELL!And u don’t live better than ppl on the outside.Don’t listen to what u always hear find out the facts like u did by asking!!
Hey jennifer. do the crime do the time. prison means you commited a crime, bottom line! Be glad they can listen to a radio. prison means you committed a crime , found guilty and sent off to make you pay for the crime. its not I made a mistake so please send me to a country club. Prison needs to get alot harder!
Jynnifer your argument is invalid. The cost for cable for inmate’s vary by state and even IF it was paid for from canteen purchases who do you think spends money to fill the prisons up with that? Just to show you it is not paid for by the prisoners. http://cnsnews.com/news/article/illinois-spent-226m-cable-tv-prisons
